On the 30th March, us boys and girls from a small town called Potenza in southern Italy, from the school Ipsia G.Giorgi, arrived in a wonderful city, Berlin. From the beginning it seemed like a very free city open to different cultures. Individually and also with the help of Berlink agency, we experienced this beautiful city by visiting various museums, monuments including the Brandenburger Gate, the Television Tower, the Berlin Wall, Checkpoint Charlie, the Parliament etc. For our arrival Berlink organized many activities, including cultural visits, the English course with a native speaker teacher, Emma, a workshop on 3D printers, but the most important lesson for us was how to manage the emotions held in the third week with Elettra.
Elettra is a very kind lady, she managed to arouse a lot of interest in her lessons to the point of letting us expose our most intimate secrets, she turned out to be a very helpful lady, in fact she spent extra time with some of us to listen to our problems and give us advice. During this course we did not hold back tears, very often it was also her words that moved us and made us think, despite the fact that we laughed, joked and played, there were times when we expressed also our weaknesses; even those who have very strong armour actually have their weaknesses. Through this course we were able to get to know each other better without the fear of being judged.
Thanks to Elettra we understood the difference between emotions and feeling, they both have a common thread: EMPATHY.
The highest expression of empathy is in accepting and not judging; then, perhaps, empathy is the only way we have to understand ourselves, through understanding others. We often believe that we know the people we see every day, but it would be enough to look them in the eye more carefully to understand that he or she is different from the person who they show to the World.
Thanks to this course and the experience in Berlin we have learned that we must not stop at appearances but dig deep to know the best that is in each of us. We would also like to bring this lesson to Italy, especially in our city, because unfortunately we are not free to express ourselves and we get criticised often.
We conclude by saying that this course will serve us in the future to improve our personalities and to help to understand why we and other people make mistakes. We are thankful to Berlink for organizing such activities amongst others!
